Over the last few years I’ve been lucky enough to meet so many talented designers and makers, who’s work and businesses I admire greatly. With Mother’s Day just around the corner I thought I do a quick edit of only a few and the products I’ve spotted that I know my mum will love!
I love these simple little studs. Handmade from polyester resin, the zingy colours really pop.
I met Cecile at Top Drawer in London when we were both exhibiting in stands opposite each other. I was instantly drawn to her bold jewellery with a retro twist and we bonded over our love of old Formica tables.
If your mum follows fashion she'll love this limey, yellow colour that is everywhere at the moment and these studs will be a winner. I was lucky enough to win a pair of TIKI hoops recently and can’t wait to show them off with a retro headscarf.
I love everything about these balsa wood, novelty broaches. Retro and right up my street, these little broaches are screen printed so that everyone is unique.
I met Helen at British Craft Trade Fair in 2014, which was my very first show. I instantly loved her stand which was set up like a fifties kitchen, complete with a yellow dresser that I am still searching for to this day. Helen’s Instagram is definitely worth a follow if you’re like me and love mid-century design. It’s full of snaps of her cheerful illustrations and her fabulous fifties inspired home.
Maybe your mum had house plants in the 80s but you can let her know they are back and bang on trend. If she's always been a house plant devotee, one of these will be perfect to pop in with her card.
I have coveted one of these necklaces for a long while now but which colour should I choose? That’s the question!
I met Beth whilst at University, she was studying jewellery design and me textiles. I have loved seeing Beth’s business grow and I am always pleased when I’m out and about in Edinburgh and I spot someone wearing one of her pieces. It happens often!
I bought my mum one of Beth’s rings when I was still at university and she often comments on how much she loves it. The beauty of these necklaces is that they come in so many colours so there will definitely be one that your mum will just adore. Anyone who gifts their mum one of these will be in the good books on Mother’s Day.
I can’t seem to stay away from orange and mustard so it’s not surprise that I’m drawn to this playful make-up pouch.
I was lucky enough to do an internship with Laura back in 2012. I spent the week at her studio printing, sewing and chatting about being a self-employed designer. It was working with Laura and her passion for her business, that really gave me the drive to set up on my own. I’m not sure if I was more of a hindrance than help that particular week, when I moved the silk screen on the last piece of fabric smudging the design. Like a true professional Laura saved the piece and we celebrated with tea and biscuits.
Mums are organised by their nature and if your mums like mine she loves having small bags within her handbag to keep everything just right. This will make any mum smile on Mother's Day, especially if you fill it with a piece of her favourite make-up.
Or what about something from under my very own hat?
Does your mum flinch when you put a mug down on the coffee table without a coaster? Earn the title of favourite child this year by giving her one of these retro, flower coaster sets and some placemats to match.
